Vier Seiten Leben

26. May 2026

A personal exploration of the history of psychiatry in the 20th century. Dorothee Kohler reads from and discusses *Vier Seiten Leben*.

A carefully researched story about a young woman, told with clarity and empathy.

Whilst sorting through her family’s estate, Dorothee Kohler comes across the name of an aunt she knew nothing about: Martha Luginbühl, born in May 1894. There it is, in black and white. Her father never mentioned having an older sister, and there is no trace of her in the family photographs. Why was Martha never spoken of?

Dorothee Kohler begins her research and discovers that Martha was institutionalised in psychiatric facilities as a young adult. Using a sparse hospital record, she sets out to piece together Martha’s case. The record refers to an ‘uncooperative’ patient who put up a fight. Further documents are found that reveal questionable treatment methods in the early 20th century, particularly in the handling of female patients. In the attempt to uncover the truth, a quiet space opens up, and the outlines of a life become visible. In a personal, precise and moving account, the author tells the story of a scarred young woman.

Dorothee Kohler, Born and raised in St. Gallen, she studied German, English and philosophy in Zurich and Tübingen. After completing her PhD, she taught German at a secondary school. She has published short literary pieces in *Entwürfe. Zeitschrift für Literatur*. Dorothee Kohler lives in Zurich.
